Mid-February this year, SustainSolar expanded its footprint electrifying health services by adding yet another hospital project to its portfolio, this time in its home country of South Africa – a first for the company.
SustainSolar delivered a solar PV and battery backup solution to a joint initiative to build a modular treatment facility at the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in East London.
Sponsored by Siemens South Africa together with the Solidarity Fund, Siemens Healthineers, Siemens Caring Hands, the GIZ and Aspen Pharmacare, this project aims to ease the burden on strained hospital space as the third wave of COVID-19 infections looms.
With a 100-bed capacity, the separate facility provides the main hospital with a desperately-needed addition of ten new intensive care beds, 90 ward beds, diagnostics services, and a pharmacy store. The extension ensures access to modern, efficient and superior-high-quality equipment.
SustainSolar’s premium quality containerised 20-foot system is equipped with 60kWp of photovoltaic (PV) capacity, 222kWh of Lithium-Ion battery and incorporates the Siemens Microgrid Controller, a power management system for utilities and microgrids. This project is the first deployment of SustainSolar’s newest product range addition, the SustainStorage.
