Cairo, Egypt — ADVEC is proud to announce the successful full approval of the grid code compliance study for the Obelisk 1.1 GW Solar + 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
The Obelisk project represents a major milestone in Egypt’s renewable energy sector due to both its scale and its advanced hybrid integration of photovoltaic (PV) generation with battery energy storage systems (BESS). The project is also the first to be evaluated under the new grid code compliance study guidelines issued by EETC in 2024.
The updated guidelines introduce a more comprehensive and technically rigorous framework aimed at enhancing study quality and ensuring higher levels of grid reliability and operational flexibility amid increasing renewable energy penetration.
Key enhancements include:
- Sequential submission procedures for all relevant studies to ensure complete compliance with technical requirements.
- Mandatory implementation of dynamic studies using vendor User-Defined Models (UDMs) or black-box models, addressing the complexity of validation and integration across multiple vendor technologies.
- Introduction of insulation coordination studies within the scope of electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies.
While these new requirements significantly increase the technical complexity of the study process, they play a critical role in supporting grid stability, flexibility, and reliability under high shares of renewable energy integration. The framework ensures that integration standards are met with minimal deviations, enabling system operators to maintain secure and stable power system operations.
ADVEC extends its sincere appreciation to Scatec ASA for their trust and collaboration throughout the project. Special recognition is given to Somdatta Chaudhury and George Victor for their continuous support and commitment during all project phases.
ADVEC also expresses gratitude to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company team for their professionalism, technical cooperation, and support throughout the approval process.
This achievement further reinforces ADVEC’s position as a leading engineering consultancy delivering advanced grid integration and renewable energy solutions across the region.
