Signet Terrace Shopping Centre today announced the commissioning and inauguration of its cutting-edge solar power plant, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions. This remarkable project is the result of a collaborative effort between Signet Terrace Shopping CentreSolarise AfricaNuvo Energy Africa, and One Stop Solar, each playing a vital role in the successful implementation of this ground-breaking initiative.

The Signet Terrace Shopping Centre solar power plant boasts a total capacity of 975.7 kWp solar PV, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in renewable energy solutions within the retail industry. By embracing this clean energy source, the shopping centre is projected to achieve an impressive 66% reduction in kWh consumption over the plant’s lifetime, significantly contributing to a greener future. In the first month alone, the solar power plant is expected to achieve a remarkable 30% reduction in kWh usage, setting a remarkable precedent for other shopping centres to follow suit.

Kavi Naidoo, Spokesperson for Signet Terrace Shopping Centre, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “We are thrilled to unveil the Signet Terrace Shopping Centre solar power plant, a testament to our commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. This installation allows us to generate a substantial portion of our electricity needs through renewable energy sources, significantly reducing our carbon footprint while ensuring long-term cost savings.”

As part of the focus on green energy, the solar installation also includes a 22kW Enelion Vertica EV Charger that powers two EV charging bays. “We are proud to introduce EV charging bays powered by our solar installation,” continued Naidoo. “This addition demonstrates our commitment to sustainable transportation options and provides a convenient solution for electric vehicle owners visiting our shopping centre.”

Sakkie van Wijk, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Solarise Africa, emphasised the significance of this project from a financing perspective, saying, “This project showcases the feasibility and financial viability of renewable energy solutions for commercial properties. By replacing 29% of the shopping centre’s electricity consumption, the Signet Terrace solar power plant will contribute to the reduction of approximately 32,720 tons of CO2 emissions over the contract period. This achievement is not only a significant step towards combating climate change but also a testament to the positive effects of renewable energy adoption.”

Jan-Hendrik Kruger, Managing Director of Nuvo Energy Africa, spoke about the construction process, saying, “We are proud to have been part of the construction and implementation of the Signet Terrace Shopping Centre solar power plant. This project involved meticulous planning, state-of-the-art technology, and a strong focus on environmental sustainability. We believe this solar power plant will serve as a shining example to other developers looking to integrate renewable energy solutions into their projects.”

Ed Young, CEO of One Stop Solar, applauded the partnership. “The successful collaboration between Signet Terrace Shopping Centre, Solarise Africa, Nuvo Energy Africa, and One Stop Solar has enabled the development of a ground-breaking solar power plant. This project sets a compelling example for other businesses seeking to embrace clean energy.”

The Signet Terrace Shopping Centre solar power plant is expected to generate 136 MWh of clean energy annually, bringing a new era of sustainable power to the retail industry. With an estimated R53 million in savings over the contract period, the solar power plant demonstrates the potential for cost-effective energy solutions that benefit both the environment and the bottom line.

This landmark project serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts in driving sustainable development. Signet Terrace Shopping Centre is proud to be at the forefront of the renewable energy movement, leading the way for other businesses to follow suit and embrace clean, green energy solutions.
