Exciting new role – Solar Technician – Solar Capital Orange PV Plant Loeriesfontein

We are looking for a Solar Technician in Loeriesfontein, Northern Cape , South Africa to be part of our global team working together towards our vision – To achieve the lowest cost of green energy worldwide while delivering high-quality, sustainable projects.

Purpose of the Role

The Solar Technician is responsible for all preventative and corrective maintenance on the solar plant while making sure all HSE procedures are adhered to. The Solar Technician must ensure maximum availability and performance ratio of the solar plant and draft technical reports on all events, root cause analysis, identifying and implementing plant optimisation projects in consultation with the Plant Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Plan, manage, and execute activities pertaining to preventative maintenance that includes:

  • Substation maintenance as per maintenance plan and schedule
  • Inverter, transformer station maintenance as per maintenance plan and schedule
  • String combiner box maintenance as per maintenance plan and schedule
  • Weather station maintenance as per maintenance plan and schedule
  • Thermographic scanning of PV modules, string combiner boxes, transformers, and inverters to detect hotspots and apply corrective measures
  • Interpret thermal drone scan reports and execute defective PV module’s replacements with minimal energy loss
  • Inspect, test, diagnose and maintain sun tracking system
  • Perform oil sampling on transformers and execute laboratory recommendations
  • Analyse plant performance data to identify potential issues and optimize system efficiency

Plan, manage, and execute activities pertaining to corrective maintenance that includes:

  • Attending to and resolving all trips on the solar plant ensuring minimum equipment downtime
  • Attend to all breakdowns, carry out fault finding/root cause analysis, resolve, fix or replace faulty equipment with minimal energy loss
  • Diagnose and replace defective PV panels
  • Diagnose, test, repair and/or replace transformers
  • Diagnose, test repair and/or replace faulty HV yard equipment

Management Support

  • Assist in the creation and driving of a positive safety culture
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of operational strategies that enhance productivity and efficiency
  • Assist in the production of plant performance reports

Competencies

  • Able to troubleshoot and analyse data including following various types of process charts, schematics, and single line diagrams.
  • Very good written and oral communication skills.
  • Well-organized and responsive in all communications including clear, concise e-mails; adept at writing technical reports.
  • Good team player; able to balance team and individual responsibilities.
  • Able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Able to manage stress and high-pressure situation.
  • Able to handle multiple projects, prioritize work and work effectively under limited supervision.
  • Switching/Operating up to 132KV with valid ORHVS training.
  • Performing plant standby duties with minimum support
  • Experience with lock-out tag-out procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.

Experience and Qualifications

  • S4 National Diploma in Electrical Engineering / N6 N National Diploma In Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years renewable energy experience (Solar)

  • Plant Manager, Solar Capital Orange PV plant.

Location

  • Loeriesfontein Northern Cape, Solar Capital Orange 86MW PV plant.
