Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) calls for affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. Yet we are nowhere close to being on track to achieving it. With only a decade left to provide universal electricity and clean cooking access, dramatically improve global energy efficiency and increase the share of renewables in the energy mix, we need immediate action to be taken by a wide range of energy stakeholders.
There are currently around 1.8 billion people between the ages of 10-24. And these youth must live with the consequences of today’s action or inaction on SDG7 and the climate crisis for decades to come. This is why youth should have a central role in shaping the sustainable energy transition. If we’re to meet SDG7 by 2030, the innovation, commitment and drive of young leaders is not just desirable—it is essential.
