DESCRIPTION:Speakers:   \n\nKersy Nsengiyumva\, Research Associate at the Africa Solar Industry Association\nJohn van Zuylen\, CEO of the Africa Solar Industry Association\n\nProductive Use of Energy (PUE) is a means of powering subsistence economies with clean energy sources such as solar to generate income and increase productivity across different sectors including agriculture\, industry\, commercial and services among others. PUE solutions such as solar fridges and solar irrigation have continuously proven to business owners the ability to make money in remote areas. While SHS\, Mini-grid and PUE terms can be used interchangeably\, solutions such as solar-powered refrigerators and irrigation systems facilitate remote business activities and generate revenue\, whereas Solar Home Systems (SHS) or Mini-grids mainly provide electricity for households\, hospitals and small businesses without any direct income generation. \nPUE presents a unique opportunity to drive renewable energy consumption and promote economic growth\, though its adoption remains low due to affordability challenges. Access to end-user finance is key to accelerate the adoption of PUE in Sub-Saharan Africa. DESCRIPTION:The 2nd annual edition – Embracing Challenges\, Unlocking Business Opportunities & Driving Private Sector Involvement \nDR Congo Minister of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity\, Olivier Mwenze Mukaleng\, stated in April 2022: “Renewable energy is a priority sector for the DRC government to foster growth\, income generation and job creation\, while supporting the ambitious goal of providing universal access to electricity”. \nThe growing demand for electricity will be met by investing further in diversified renewables projects\, in particular decentralized power solutions using solar\, wind\, geothermal or hydro. The Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa (BGFA)’s funding round in DRC has been an initial catalyzer to promote clean off-grid energy solutions. If fully implemented\, the Grand Inga Dam project has the capacity to produce 42GW\, becoming the world’s biggest hydroelectricity project. However\, there are immediate electricity challenges in the region so\, going for small-scale and lower-cost options will play a critical role to overcome grid limitations and expand electricity access to the population in rural and peri-urban areas. A bonanza for technology providers\, next generation storage systems providers\, transmission and distributed power infrastructure. \nFurthermore\, due to its position as a key source of minerals\, DRC wants to play a leading role in the shift to a clean energy system. The scaling up of the worldwide energy transition will drive a huge increase in the requirements for metals used in batteries\, solar components\, wind turbines and also electric vehicles. DESCRIPTION:Kenya is all prepared to spend USD 2.1 billion on electrification in off-grid areas focusing on renewable powered minigrids.As part of the nation’s 2016-21 strategic plan\, the Rural Electrification Authority aims to install around 450 minigrids powered by solar sources. \nOn the consumer side\, it is estimated that about 25\,000 to 30\,000 solar PV products are traded annually in the Kenyan market and that at least every household has owned atleast one solar PV product. \nThe 06th Solar Expo Kenya will not only serve as a platform in Kenya but the entire East and Central African region. The participation in 2023 is expected to rise by at least 30% owing to the ever increasing need of solar projects and products in Africa. DESCRIPTION:Although Sub-Saharan Africa boasts 60% of the world’s solar resources\, it currently only hosts 1% of the global solar PV capacity. At the Unlocking Solar Capital Africa conference\, international and local PV\nproject development and investment professionals will come together to discuss the key challenges and solutions to bridging the financing gap\, scaling up PV installations\, and unlocking the full potential of both on-grid and off-grid solar energy solutions. \nThe Sub-Saharan African region is undoubtedly one of the regions most crucial to the global expansion of solar PV and the acceleration of the renewable energy transition. It is home to nearly 600 million people lacking access to electricity – over 50% of its total population. Currently\, the region is at a major turning point. With falling construction costs\, an abundance of solar irradiation and local mineral sources available\, and a buzzing investment climate\, renewable energy additions are set to overshadow fossil fuel-based energy generation facilities this decade. \nUnlocking finance and developing bankable projects are key to securing Africa’s clean energy future. Recent figures show that over $20 billion has already been invested in solar over the past decade – and there will be a doubling of energy investments by 2030. To expand the growth of renewables in the region\, challenges such as the flexibility and reliability of the grid\, as well as the affordability for end-users\, will have to be faced head-on. Furthermore\, developers need to be aware of the latest capital pathways to support the industry's healthy growth. And for solar to scale\, all application sizes and technologies must be in the mix. Utility-scale solar plants; impactful mini-grids and small-scale off-grid installations in regions that the grid can’t reach; battery storage applications; and innovations in financing\, software tools\, and design all have significant roles to play that can’t be viewed independently. \nThe exchange of knowledge and network is more critical than ever.
