SUMMARY:6th Africa Mini Grids Summit
DESCRIPTION:In Africa\, mini grids have been identified as a key platform to address critical electrification shortages. Creating successful mini grid ecosystems beyond pilot projects is now the focus of African governments facing severe shortages especially for their off-grid populations. Tanzania\, Kenya\, Uganda\, Nigeria\, and Ghana are just some of the countries with frameworks and supportive policies to expand energy access through mini grids. Foundations\, donors and organizations are stepping-up their financial support for mini grids as momentum gears-up towards universal energy access by 2030. \nAfrica has the largest share of planned mini grids. World Bank data shows that more than 4\,000 mini grids are currently being planned. The two largest markets for planned mini grids in Africa are Senegal and Nigeria – these two countries alone account for about 2\,000 of the 4\,000 planned mini grids in Africa. \nMore info here

SUMMARY:Infrastructure Africa
DESCRIPTION:The 2 day Infrastructure Africa Business Forum will bring together business to explore new trading opportunities\, establish new business networks\, develop and form partnerships and plan a way forward to address some of the continent’s requirements. The 7th annual Infrastructure Africa Business Forum will present stakeholders with an opportunity to unpack the enormous growth potential in addressing Africa’s infrastructure needs. Africa\, with a population exceeding 1 billion people is well placed as an emerging market\, keen for investment and growth. \nThe story of Africa’s development is improving. Six of the world’s fastest growing economies are in Africa! Democratic governance has been strengthened over the past five decades\, enabling a platform for stable growth and prosperity in most parts of the continent. However\, to build the infrastructure the continent needs to support growth and meet development goals; Africa will have to spend about $93 billion a year for a decade. Two-thirds of that sum would be for investments; the remaining third for maintenance. Africa already spends $45 billion a year on infrastructure\, two-thirds of which is domestically financed from taxes and user charges. Most financing for capital investment is obtained from external sources according to the African Development Bank Group. \nmore info here

SUMMARY:Online conference: Renpower Africa Renewables & Mining
DESCRIPTION:As the world transitions into a Green Recovery\, we invite you to join us at RENPOWER Africa: Mining and Renewables – Online Conference. This exclusive virtual event will give you insights to the mining industry’s commitment in Africa to a greener environment as well as networking opportunities to engage with key stakeholders of the mining and renewable sectors. \nScalability of renewables in mining – the idea of integrating renewable energy generation – solar\, wind\, biomass\, thermal\, hydro – in mining operations has become more evident as the costs of these technologies continue to decrease countering the climb of demand for cleaner solutions to reduce carbon emissions in this sector. The African continent is not the exception as mining activities are high across the continent. \nPowering mines with renewable energy sources represent economic and environmental benefits which cannot be overseen by investors and governments. Mining activities consume about 6.2% of the total global energy and 48% of energy in South Africa\, alone. Reliable and cost-effective energy continues to be a challenge for the mining sector to thrive as load shedding and unavailable power infrastructure are some of the hurdles that prevent productivity. \nAs a response\, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are offering solutions with greater flexibility responding to the fast-evolving market. More than a dozen projects were announced or commissioned in the last year where mining companies integrate renewable energy to power their activities\, putting approximately 1\,500 MW for power self-generation in the pipelines. \nHowever\, one of the questions of actuality remains as the global economy recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic and how this crisis will catalyze changes in the mining sector seeking new opportunities to improve operations and increase productivity. \nThe opportunity is on the rise for renewable energy technologies and off-grid solutions to tap into the mining African market. \nNot just a webinar – a full event experience!\nWhy attend:\n• Two days of online sessions\, for 6.5+ hours;\n• 25+ expert speakers to learn about opportunities for renewable energy technologies and off-grid solutions in the African mining market;\n• Participate to the live Q&A and also access the on-demand recording of the event to view the presentations and panel discussions later on;\n• Access our platforms to network with attendees for up to 5 weeks after the event (create your profile\, schedule meetings\, messaging and more);\n• Connect from anywhere in the world & share business opportunities! \n\nWho will participate: This live stream event will bring together representatives from renewable power developers\, EPC contractors\, engineering companies\, manufacturers and other industries\, mining and transport companies\, legal and advisory services\, banking and private equity entities as well as from governments\, policy makers and international finance institutions (IFIs). \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Gauging the Corporate Power Purchase Agreement market
DESCRIPTION:The Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) market is set to realise exponential growth as global corporations are now looking more at this market for renewable energy procurement solutions to fulfil their decarbonisation objectives. \nCorporations bought a record amount of clean energy through PPAs in 2019\, up more than 40% from the previous year’s record. \nAccording to the Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s 1H 2020 Corporate Energy Market Outlook\, some 19.5GW of clean energy contracts were signed by more than 100 corporations in 23 different countries in 2019. This was up from 13.6GW in 2018\, and more than triple the activity seen in 2017. \nThe high profile RE100 campaign\, a global corporate leadership initiative bringing together influential businesses committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity\, has seen some of the world’s largest companies commit to this goal. \nThe RE100 totaled 221 members through 2019\, collectively consuming 233TWh of electricity in 2018\, based on their latest filings – slightly less than South Africa’s entire power generation fleet. \nBloomberg New Energy Finance estimates these 221 RE100 companies will need to purchase an additional 210TWh of clean electricity in 2030 to meet their targets. \nAs onsite power becomes the new norm\, CPPAs will likely continue to be the preferred choice in enabling corporates’ meet their decarbonisation goals while ensuring stable power supply and low energy costs. \nThis live discussion will provide information on the benefits and risks involved with regards to the evolving nature of CPPAs. \n  \nRead more and register
