SUMMARY:Big modules\, bigger ballast? – New safety considerations for the rooftop sector
DESCRIPTION:If it wouldn’t be for ballasting\, a mild storm could blow away rooftop PV installations easily. The exact amount of ballast has always been a point of contention between various wind tunnel experts and the mounting structure suppliers. To make matters more contentious\, modules hit a growth spurt last year\, and there is no clear regulatory guidance as to how this additional surface area should affect ballasting calculations. \nIn this PV magazine Webinar\, together with our initiative partner Premium Mounting Technologies\, PMT\, we want to take a deep dive into the aerodynamics of rooftop installations. Joining us from the company is their founding CTO\, Peter Grass. We will look at the aerodynamics of bigger modules and discuss wind tunnel studies to determine the right ballast. We will show what installers and project developers can do to rest assured wind will not blow their installation off the roof with the next storm that is brewing. \nAlso\, we will talk about the implications of a lack of clear regulations in the form of codes and standards. Finally\, we will also look at PMT’s latest roof top mounting system designed for large form factor modules. According to its makers\, they didn’t just tinker with the system’s girth but also had it wind tunnel tested for use with large modules\, which had them overhaul the ballasting advice. \nJoin this webinar and learn more about wind effects on big modules\, aerodynamic testing\, structure codes\, and how to ensure your next project is safe. \nThe session will comprise a presentation part and an interactive Q&A session – providing attendees with the opportunity to put their questions to the speakers and become a part of the discussion. \nQuestions can be submitted beforehand or during the webinar through a chat window. \nMarian Willuhn\, editor at  PV magazine\, will be the moderator of this webinar. \nWe look forward to your participation! \nRegister here

SUMMARY:The Development of Healthy Cities In Sub-Saharan Africa: Stepping Up Clean Electricity Uses
DESCRIPTION:Affordable and reliable electricity access from renewable energy sources is a prerequisite for the development of sustainable and healthy cities in sub-Saharan Africa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn light of the growing urban population and the sector’s difficulties in expanding at the same rate\, people and businesses increasingly have an incentive to use additional ways to generate electricity to meet their energy needs. If solar systems are starting to be deployed in cities\, polluting diesel generators remain the preferred means for tackling grid failures. These phenomena are resulting in increased “tensions” in the region’s electrical sector\, between small centralized networks and growing self-consumption. The challenge is daunting as demand for clean\, reliable\, and competitive electricity is expected to increase sharply\, not least for addressing massive air pollution problems\, for example from the transport sector. \nAs African cities projections will account for the bulk of the population in less than 30 years\, energy usages in urban areas will be key for the continent’s sustainable energy access and energy transition. \nColumbia Global Centers Nairobi\, SIPA Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) and Ifri’s Center for Energy & Climate are pleased to hold this joint webinar with leading experts of the sector on the development of clean electricity systems in sub-Saharan cities. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Can you design sustainable PV backsheets without compromising performance?
DESCRIPTION:Economic stimulus measures and the mantra of “build back better”\, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic\, has many industries taking a fresh look at their products and activities to achieve better environmental outcomes. This is true of solar\, where module manufacturers are seeing increased sustainability scrutiny. \nBacksheets are a crucial component when it comes to module performance and durability\, however to achieve these objectives is potentially hazardous – particularly if backsheet materials are burned at end of life. \nHalogen-free materials are available for use in PV backsheets\, which do not contain hazardous chemicals unlike their fluorinated counterparts. Their proponents argue that backsheets using these materials can achieve the durability required for 20 to 30 year lifespan for a PV module\, while delivering substantially enhanced sustainability outcomes. \nResearch is underway to explore whether halogen-free backsheets can be effectively recycled\, and closed-loop manufacturing achieved\, with the material recovered reused in the manufacturer of new PV modules. \nJoin this free PV magazine Webinar to learn about the challenges to module recycling and how halogen-free backsheets can be effectively recycled – along with their efficacy regarding durability. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Global Dialogue: Scaling a clean energy food transformation
DESCRIPTION:Renewable energy has the potential to transform food systems in Africa and developing Asia\, build a more climate-resilient future for smallholder farmers\, and drive economic growth. Not just using solar irrigation\, which has already seen significant momentum in the past 5 years\, but for agro-processing\, cold storage and much more. According to the IFC\, however\, affordability is the main barrier preventing smallholder farmers from adopting these solutions at scale. Numerous other barriers exist. Unlocking the potential requires business models and systems approaches that can take advantage of digitalization\, innovative financing and “servitization”\, which democratizes access and aggregates demand. \nThis dialogue will examine the most innovative approaches being implemented today and glean key learnings that can feed into game changing recommendations for the UN Food Systems Summit\, COP26 and the High Level Dialogue on Energy. \n  \nRegister Here
