DESCRIPTION:The RENPOWER SENEGAL & IVORY COAST – investors 2021 has been designed to facilitate the dialogue among a wide cross-section of energy sector stakeholders – local and regional policymakers\, private sector representatives and international experts – gathered to move forward with the resolution of adopting renewable energy to address key challenges such as energy security\, energy sustainability and a resilient power infrastructure. \nSenegal’s and Ivory Coast’s energy policies are focused on the expansion of generation capacity. The need to fulfill rising demand is driving diversification of the energy mix\, which is evidenced by their respective target of generating a significant part of their electricity needs from renewables in the next decade. \nIvory Coast has made rapid progress in electrification. The share of renewable energies in the production mix is expected to rise to 42% and the grid to cover 99% of the population by 2035. Ivory Coast’s installed generation capacity of 2200 MW remains the third largest in West Africa after Nigeria and Ghana. The early development of its electricity generation infrastructure has allowed the country to become an electricity exporter to its neighbors. The decision to privatize a portion of its electricity sector has paved the way for one of Africa’s most robust energy systems that continues to expand and innovate with clean energy solutions. \nUnder its Gas to Power Strategy\, Senegal is giving a prominent place to natural gas and to power industries in its energy mix. It is also giving a strong signal for a truly diversified and sustainable energy transition in the years to come\, with clear legislation and roadmaps developed for all major sources of clean energy such as renewables and natural gas. The Senegalese government is targeting to reach universal access to electricity by 2025. This is expected to be achieved by expanding the existing power grid and adding around 180 MW of off-grid generation capacity. SUMMARY:Reducing the cost of capital for solar projects in Africa
DESCRIPTION:African countries are in a unique position to reap the socio-economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy resources to meet their increasing energy demand in a sustainable way. However\, the difficulty of attracting sufficient and affordable finance is an obstacle to building more solar projects in Africa. The financing costs of a solar project are a function of the capital needs from investors and the returns demanded by these investors\, and usually consist of a mix of debt and equity. The weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is a measure to express the average financing cost of a project. Studies show that the WACC in African countries can be several times higher than in European countries. Therefore\, counter-intuitively\, solar electricity might be cheaper in a low-sun and low-risk country in Europe than in an African country with a higher level of solar irradiation. De-risking policies and financing mechanisms can reduce the perceived or actual investment risks and barriers and bring the cost of capital down\, ultimately leading to a boost in the construction of new solar projects. The webinar\, organised by SolarPower Europe and supported by GET.invest – a European programme supported by the European Union\, Germany\, Sweden\, the Netherlands\, and Austria – will gather African and European experts to shed light on how to reduce the levels of cost of capital for solar projects in Africa. \n\n\n\nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:As the number of PV systems already in operation for several years grows\, demand for “revamping” by replacement off all the inverters in a project is estimated at several gigawatts per year and expected to increase rapidly through the 2020s. There are a number of reasons why project owners are taking interest in this strategy. In some cases\, older inverters may simply be underperforming\, or may be struggling to get hold of replacement parts for models no longer manufactured or suppliers that have since left the market. The exact amount of ballast has always been a point of contention between various wind tunnel experts and the mounting structure suppliers. To make matters more contentious\, modules hit a growth spurt last year\, and there is no clear regulatory guidance as to how this additional surface area should affect ballasting calculations. \nIn this PV magazine Webinar\, together with our initiative partner Premium Mounting Technologies\, PMT\, we want to take a deep dive into the aerodynamics of rooftop installations. SUMMARY:The Development of Healthy Cities In Sub-Saharan Africa: Stepping Up Clean Electricity Uses
DESCRIPTION:Affordable and reliable electricity access from renewable energy sources is a prerequisite for the development of sustainable and healthy cities in sub-Saharan Africa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn light of the growing urban population and the sector’s difficulties in expanding at the same rate\, people and businesses increasingly have an incentive to use additional ways to generate electricity to meet their energy needs. If solar systems are starting to be deployed in cities\, polluting diesel generators remain the preferred means for tackling grid failures. These phenomena are resulting in increased “tensions” in the region’s electrical sector\, between small centralized networks and growing self-consumption. The challenge is daunting as demand for clean\, reliable\, and competitive electricity is expected to increase sharply\, not least for addressing massive air pollution problems\, for example from the transport sector. \nAs African cities projections will account for the bulk of the population in less than 30 years\, energy usages in urban areas will be key for the continent’s sustainable energy access and energy transition. \nColumbia Global Centers Nairobi\, SIPA Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) and Ifri’s Center for Energy & Climate are pleased to hold this joint webinar with leading experts of the sector on the development of clean electricity systems in sub-Saharan cities. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Can you design sustainable PV backsheets without compromising performance?
DESCRIPTION:Economic stimulus measures and the mantra of “build back better”\, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic\, has many industries taking a fresh look at their products and activities to achieve better environmental outcomes. This is true of solar\, where module manufacturers are seeing increased sustainability scrutiny. \nBacksheets are a crucial component when it comes to module performance and durability\, however to achieve these objectives is potentially hazardous – particularly if backsheet materials are burned at end of life. \nHalogen-free materials are available for use in PV backsheets\, which do not contain hazardous chemicals unlike their fluorinated counterparts. Their proponents argue that backsheets using these materials can achieve the durability required for 20 to 30 year lifespan for a PV module\, while delivering substantially enhanced sustainability outcomes. \nResearch is underway to explore whether halogen-free backsheets can be effectively recycled\, and closed-loop manufacturing achieved\, with the material recovered reused in the manufacturer of new PV modules. \nJoin this free PV magazine Webinar to learn about the challenges to module recycling and how halogen-free backsheets can be effectively recycled – along with their efficacy regarding durability. \nRegister here
