SUMMARY:Decarbonizing Agriculture: Renewable Energy and the Sustainable Future of Food
DESCRIPTION:During Climate Week NYC 2023\, Power for All is hosting a webinar with participation from IRENA\, UN FAO\, and others. This session will delve into the intersection of Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 7. We welcome you to join this enlightening discussion where we’ll present our primary research findings. Discover how distributed renewable energy (DRE) can amplify agricultural productivity\, contribute to the decarbonization of the food system\, curtail greenhouse gas emissions\, and mitigate the worst impacts of global warming. \nOverview\nAgrifood systems\, using 30% of global energy and emitting a third of greenhouse gases\, intensify the climate crisis. With a projected 60% surge in food demand by 2050\, urgent shifts to sustainable and more productive agriculture are vital. Decentralized renewable energy (DRE) offers hope. However\, particularly in the Global South\, it requires immediate funding and effective government policies. \nSession Outline \n\nDistributed Renewable Energy (DRE) is emerging as a pivotal solution for agriculture\, ensuring consistent power and reducing carbon emissions. This global launch event brings together a diverse array of stakeholders – from international funders\, ministries\, and private companies to media and farming communities. Join us for a research-driven panel discussion led by experts including: \n\nDr. Rabia Ferroukhi\, Director\, Knowledge\, Policy and Finance Center\, International Renewable Energy Agency.\nNicole Iseppi\, Director – Global Energy Innovation\, Bezos Earth Fund\nBrian Kawuma\, Powering Agriculture Director\, Power for All; Ugandan Horticultural Farmer\nDr. Michela Morese\, Energy Team Leader\, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.\nKristina Skierka\, Founder and CEO of Power for All\n\nThe discussion will delve into: \n\nRelevance of DRE: While countries work to further their agricultural development\, the potential of DRE is often overlooked.\nApplications and Opportunities: Finance and policy initiatives need to be strengthened to ensure DRE technology is available for smallholder farmers.\nInitiatives in Action: We will highlight real-world examples that showcase the benefits of integrating renewable energy with agricultural methods.\nImpact on Climate Change: DRE is not only essential for power generation but also plays a role in combating climate change. We will present data on how integrating it into agricultural strategies can combat the negative impacts of climate change on food systems\, helping ensure food security.\n\nThrough our research and this discussion\, we aim to demonstrate that by emphasizing DRE in agricultural strategies\, stakeholders can boost efficiency\, advance sustainability\, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:RENPOWER MAGHREB – 8th Annual Edition – Market Expansion Means Business – Unveiling Potential – Promising Horizons
DESCRIPTION:Languages: English and French with simultaneous translation. \nMaghreb has made tremendous progress in renewable energy development over the past decade\, with significant investments being made to transition from fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives. \nIn 2023\, the Government of Tunisia released a call for bids for 1\,700 MW in renewable power over the 2023-2025 period. The tender includes eight 100 MW solar projects\, eight 75 MW wind projects and two other solar projects. Back to June 2022\, the country raised its target for renewables from 30 to 35% of power generation. To reach this objective\, Tunisia intends to develop more than 4 GW of new renewables capacity by 2030\, around 500 MW/year over a period of 8 years. \nWhilst the country’s energy mix remains still predominantly fossil fuel-based\, Algeria aims to reach a renewable energy capacity of 15\,000 MW and produce 27% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2035.  Earlier in July\, state-owned power utility Sonelgaz revealed a list of bidders for a 2 GW solar tender to develop solar projects in 11 locations throughout the country with capacities ranging from between 80 MW and 220 MW. \nMauritania has significant potential for both solar and wind energy\, making the country an attractive green hydrogen market. It has set forth plans for hydrogen projects that could potentially generate 80 GW of electroliser capacity. Although gas remains a priority\, the government intends to gradually introduce more renewable energy sources. The country expects to deliver its first green hydrogen projects in 2030\, advancing from grey to blue to green energy. \nThe Libyan National Oil Company recently announced ambitious decarbonization plans. For international investors\, developers and technology providers\, this opens new opportunities for investing in renewable energy and green hydrogen. With ample sunshine and excellent winds along the Mediterranean coast\, the conditions for renewable energy production are ideal. Betting on its proximity to Europe\, Libya is preparing to become an exporter of green electricity in the post-hydrocarbon era. \nMorocco is currently developing a number of renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 4.6 GWs. Developments for the period 2023-2027 are expected to reach 1.3 GWs. Morocco has exceptional resources of wind and solar energy on land\, and a great potential for the development of off-shore wind energy. Last August\, the country invested $5.2 billion in solar-related projects\, with the Noor Ouarzazate complex\, the largest renewable project in Morocco\, reflecting the potential RE in the country. \nShowcasing first-movers success stories around carbon-free hydrogen\, exploring pathways of scaling-up projects throughout Power-to-X\, as well as harmonizing roadmaps of the countries in the region will be discussed at this 8th edition.
