SUMMARY:AFSIA e-conference: latest updates on storage technologies
DESCRIPTION:The global increase in renewable generation is hastening the development of energy storage systems to address regulatory\, economic\, and operational issues related to energy scarcity. \nSome African countries are encouraging private developers to build large-scale regional solar parks with storage capacity to help smooth the flow of solar energy and redirect some of the power generated during the day to evening peak hours. \nThe International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that Africa’s renewable energy capacity could reach 310GW by 2030\, making Africa the world’s leading producer of green energy. If this prediction becomes true\, energy storage appears to play a critical role in integrating renewables into the grid. \nThis e-conference aims at bringing together the best experts of the industry to provide a full overview of the latest updates on energy storage. SUMMARY:Unlocking Solar Capital Africa
DESCRIPTION:Although Sub-Saharan Africa boasts 60% of the world’s solar resources\, it currently only hosts 1% of the global solar PV capacity. At the Unlocking Solar Capital Africa conference\, international and local PV\nproject development and investment professionals will come together to discuss the key challenges and solutions to bridging the financing gap\, scaling up PV installations\, and unlocking the full potential of both on-grid and off-grid solar energy solutions. \nThe Sub-Saharan African region is undoubtedly one of the regions most crucial to the global expansion of solar PV and the acceleration of the renewable energy transition. It is home to nearly 600 million people lacking access to electricity – over 50% of its total population. Currently\, the region is at a major turning point. With falling construction costs\, an abundance of solar irradiation and local mineral sources available\, and a buzzing investment climate\, renewable energy additions are set to overshadow fossil fuel-based energy generation facilities this decade. \nUnlocking finance and developing bankable projects are key to securing Africa’s clean energy future. Recent figures show that over $20 billion has already been invested in solar over the past decade – and there will be a doubling of energy investments by 2030. To expand the growth of renewables in the region\, challenges such as the flexibility and reliability of the grid\, as well as the affordability for end-users\, will have to be faced head-on. Furthermore\, developers need to be aware of the latest capital pathways to support the industry's healthy growth. And for solar to scale\, all application sizes and technologies must be in the mix. Utility-scale solar plants; impactful mini-grids and small-scale off-grid installations in regions that the grid can’t reach; battery storage applications; and innovations in financing\, software tools\, and design all have significant roles to play that can’t be viewed independently. \nThe exchange of knowledge and network is more critical than ever. The 5th edition of Unlocking Solar Capital Africa will gather high-level local and international stakeholders from the project development and investment space\, interested in unlocking the growth opportunities for solar PV in Africa in both the on- and off-grid segments. Solarplaza – the global platform for network & knowledge sharing in the PV industry – and GOGLA – the global off-grid lighting association – are proud to join forces again to tap into all networks and sources of expertise to offer the most interactive\, inspirational\, and activating edition yet. \nUnlocking Solar Capital Africa\n31 May – 1 June 2023 – Kampala\, Uganda\nTickets: €895(Early Bird) / €995 (Regular)\nPress contact: alyce@solarplaza.com \nRegister Today here

SUMMARY:Productive Use Catalog Launch
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \n\nKersy Nsengiyumva\, Research Associate at the Africa Solar Industry Association\nJohn van Zuylen\, CEO of the Africa Solar Industry Association\n\nProductive Use of Energy (PUE) is a means of powering subsistence economies with clean energy sources such as solar to generate income and increase productivity across different sectors including agriculture\, industry\, commercial and services among others. PUE solutions such as solar fridges and solar irrigation have continuously proven to business owners the ability to make money in remote areas. While SHS\, Mini-grid and PUE terms can be used interchangeably\, solutions such as solar-powered refrigerators and irrigation systems facilitate remote business activities and generate revenue\, whereas Solar Home Systems (SHS) or Mini-grids mainly provide electricity for households\, hospitals and small businesses without any direct income generation. \nPUE presents a unique opportunity to drive renewable energy consumption and promote economic growth\, though its adoption remains low due to affordability challenges. Access to end-user finance is key to accelerate the adoption of PUE in Sub-Saharan Africa. It may take a few years for PUE products to become commercially attractive\, but some of the products are already on the right path such as solar water pumps being considered the best acceleration option compared to solar lights and TVs for poverty reduction. \nConsidering the above\, AFSIA has compiled a “Productive Use Catalog” to enlighten the comprehension of what is productive use of energy\, its different applications\, how beneficial it has been for many companies/end-users and what we could expect in the near future. \nPoints to be discussed during the launching event includes: \n\nWhat is productive use of energy and its applications in a nutshell\nHow to navigate the different catalog sections\nHighlighting the differences between PUE and other uses of solar energy\nExplanation of key economic numbers\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Webinar on Expanding Solar & Long-Duration Storage Opportunities - Focus on Potential of LDES in Africa
DESCRIPTION:According to the African Economic Outlook 2022\, over 600 million people or 43% of the total population have no access to electricity. The growth & economic development of the continent calls for universal access as well as a cost effective\, reliable & stable supply of energy. \nThe annual installed solar capacity hit 949 MW in 2022 itself\, a 14% y-o-y growth compared to 2021 making the cumulative capacity to 10.5 GW according to African Solar Industry Association (AFSIA). Africa is home to 60% of the world’s best solar resources\, but just 1% of the global solar capacity installed\, and intends to maximize the\ncontinent’s potential with ambitions to reach 510 GW by the end of 2030 (IEA). \nSolar PV is already the cheapest sources in many parts of the continent & with its current economic attractiveness is gaining momentum and has the potential to be deployed in a rapid manner with increasing investments. \nHowever\, the challenges pertaining to intermittency\, seasonal variability\, balancing of grids need addressing & that is where energy storage can play an important role providing flexibility & reliability with a tremendous impact in enabling energy access. \nLong Duration Energy storage can smooth out the delivery of the intermittent resources by storing excess energy when the sun is shining & delivering it both during night and off-season periods\, as well as providing flexible\, dispatchable power. \nThis workshop is designed to bring together associations\, policymakers\, developers\, manufacturers and civil society organizations to discuss how solar and long duration energy storage can help Africa meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) of universal access to clean\, modern\, and affordable energy for the continent. \nDraft Agenda\nTime Speakers\n09:00-09:03 Official welcome by Julia Souder\, Long Duration Energy Storage Council09:03 – 09:18 Introductory Presentation by Alexander Hogeveen Rutter\, International Solar Alliance.\n09:18 – 09:55 (all-speakers tentative-first draft) Roundtable Discussion\, Moderated by Julia Souder\, LDES Council\nAnton Harris\, VOITH\nDr. Souleymane Berthe\, Director General Mali AER Shruti Shukla\, NRDC\nTBD\, ESS\nTBD\, WAPP\n09:55-10:00 Concluding remarks and thanks by Dwaipayan Chakraborty\, International Solar Alliance \nRegister here

SUMMARY:07th SOLAR AFRICA 2023 – Tanzania
DESCRIPTION:The overwhelming response from the Solar Industry has encouraged Expogroup to launch Solar Africa Exhibition\, to be held concurrently with P&E Africa. \nThe region offers tremendous opportunities to suppliers worldwide\, having among the strongest solar resources in the world. In particular\, the region offers excellent potential for concentrated solar power (CSP) and concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems. \nMany African countries are currently exploring the use of solar and other renewables\, using tenders (or PPAs) as the vehicle for expansion. As incentives in Europe decrease\, project developers and investors are keenly interested in deploying solar technologies in Africa. Vast rural areas produce high demand for solar electrification. \nPower grids in rural Africa currently tend to be powered by diesel generator sets often running 24 hours each day. While relatively cheap to buy\, speedy to install and simple to use\, these diesel generator sets burn a lot of fuel\, push out CO2 and require a lot of refueling and maintenance. Rising diesel prices and environmental concerns are therefore driving grid operators to reconsider their offering and reduce emissions. SUMMARY:04th SOLAR AFRICA 2023 - Ethiopia
DESCRIPTION:Solar Africa – Solar Exhibition In Ethiopia \nThe overwhelming response from the Solar Industry has encouraged Expogroup to launch “SOLAR AFRICA” and after successful editions in Kenya and Tanzania Solar Africa is all set to step in the Ethiopian Market. \nSolar Africa in Ethiopia will be held concurrently with Power &Energy Africa from 19 – 21 January 2023 . \nThe region offers tremendous opportunities to suppliers worldwide\, having among the strongest solar resources in the world. In particular\, the region offers excellent potential for concentrated solar power (CSP) and concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems. \nSolar photovoltaics are being promoted to replace fuel-based lighting and off-grid electrical needs. Ethiopia is thought to have about 5 MW of off-grid solar. Almost all current solar power is used for telecommunications. Other uses include village well pumps\, health care and school lighting. A current government initiative plans to bring solar power to 150\,000 households. The first phase included 1 MW of panels. The first large installation of solar was a village grid of 10 kW in 1985\, expanded to 30 kW in 1989. A solar panel assembly plant opened in Addis Ababa in early 2013 capable of making 20 MW of panel per year. \nMany African countries are currently exploring the use of solar and other renewable energy\, with Ethiopia being a strong market for Solar industry and is currently focusing on developing the same. The Government is also being very supportive by allowing solar products to enter the country duty free. Learn more Here \nCome\, be a part of progress in Africa!\nRegistration link
