SUMMARY:Sustainable Energy Forum for East Africa (SEFEA)
DESCRIPTION:The East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE) and the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) will be co-organising the second edition of the Sustainable Energy Forum for East Africa (SEFEA) on 22-24 June 2021. The event is supported by GET.invest\, a European programme supported by the European Union\, Germany\, Sweden\, the Netherlands\, and Austria; and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The event will be held in English and French with simultaneous translations. \nConsidering the global COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing travel difficulties\, the event will be held virtually. \nSEFEA will raise awareness about the progress made by EAC member states toward achieving sustainable energy targets set for 2030. It will also focus on achieving the vision of the EAC for a prosperous regional sustainable energy market\, which is contingent upon harnessing the region’s vast renewable energy and energy efficiency potentials. A particular focus will be given to the role of decentralised renewable energy (DRE) in powering the EAC region. \nSEFEA will be organised over 3 days with four overarching themes: \n\nThematic Session I: Powering rural job creation in EAC with decentralised renewable energies\nThematic Session II: Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances in EAC and SADC (EELA)\nThematic Session III: Innovative financing of productive uses of energy and cold chain\nThematic Session IV: Scaling up access to clean cooking in the EAC region.\n\nThe Forum will feature: \n\nPresentations from public sector stakeholders on progress towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of DRE in achieving these goals by 2030;\nInteractive topical discussions with public and private sector stakeholders pertaining to the key themes of SEFEA;\nPitches from selected private sector companies and start-ups offering innovative DRE solutions and business models to energise the EAC region;\nVirtual 1:1 meetings during the GET.invest Matchmaking before\, during and after the event to increase partnerships;\nA deep-dive workshop focusing on DRE in Burundi.\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Energy Storage: Enabling large-scale dispatchable renewable energy on South Africa’s grid
DESCRIPTION:The South African energy landscape is faced with the unique challenge and opportunity to become more energy secure by using renewable sources for future generation. The nation and country have long been disturbed by frequent blackouts\, outdated electricity infrastructure with supply constraints\, and an urgent need for additional capacity to prevent load shedding. \nThe country has prioritised a fast-track basis for large-scale dispatchable energy capacity to bridge the gap between demand and supply. \nFor the first time on such a scale\, hybrid plants\, including renewables\, storage\, and thermal power\, have been offered and have resulted competitive to provide dispatchable power and are currently navigating to reach financial close no later than end-July 2021. \nBesides the co-location of RE and energy storage\, South Africa is also considering stand-alone solutions\, currently under the Eskom program\, to provide direct balance services and attenuate the impact of renewable energy generation on the grid. \nThis webinar will discuss how smart energy storage solutions can drive South Africa’s electricity grid to a 100% renewable future: \n\nOverview of the competitive and regulatory South African energy environment to understand the use-case(s) for co-located flexible storage projects.\nUnderstand the challenges that renewable integration presents\, and how energy storage technology can support the secure scale-up and integration of multiple generation assets under a single portfolio\, with a look at AI and real-time data analytics.\nLearn about current renewables-plus-storage projects—islanded and grid-forming/connected—for stable grid balancing and performance optimisation.\n\nRegister here
