SUMMARY:Sustainable Energy Forum for East Africa (SEFEA)
DESCRIPTION:The East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE) and the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) will be co-organising the second edition of the Sustainable Energy Forum for East Africa (SEFEA) on 22-24 June 2021. The event is supported by GET.invest\, a European programme supported by the European Union\, Germany\, Sweden\, the Netherlands\, and Austria; and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The event will be held in English and French with simultaneous translations. \nConsidering the global COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing travel difficulties\, the event will be held virtually. \nSEFEA will raise awareness about the progress made by EAC member states toward achieving sustainable energy targets set for 2030. It will also focus on achieving the vision of the EAC for a prosperous regional sustainable energy market\, which is contingent upon harnessing the region’s vast renewable energy and energy efficiency potentials. A particular focus will be given to the role of decentralised renewable energy (DRE) in powering the EAC region. \nSEFEA will be organised over 3 days with four overarching themes: \n\nThematic Session I: Powering rural job creation in EAC with decentralised renewable energies\nThematic Session II: Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances in EAC and SADC (EELA)\nThematic Session III: Innovative financing of productive uses of energy and cold chain\nThematic Session IV: Scaling up access to clean cooking in the EAC region.\n\nThe Forum will feature: \n\nPresentations from public sector stakeholders on progress towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of DRE in achieving these goals by 2030;\nInteractive topical discussions with public and private sector stakeholders pertaining to the key themes of SEFEA;\nPitches from selected private sector companies and start-ups offering innovative DRE solutions and business models to energise the EAC region;\nVirtual 1:1 meetings during the GET.invest Matchmaking before\, during and after the event to increase partnerships;\nA deep-dive workshop focusing on DRE in Burundi.\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:SANS PV INSTALLATION STANDARDS
DESCRIPTION:Description \nSouth African National Standard\nThe session will cover the following:\n– The wiring of premises\n-Part 1-2: Specific requirements for embedded generation installations connected to the low voltage distribution Network in South Africa. This vital standard is used in South Africa for all types of low voltage electrical installations. The Occupational Health and Safety Act\, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993) (OHS Act)\, which is administered by the Chief Inspector of Occupational Health and Safety of the Department of Labour\, requires that electrical installations comply with the requirements of SANS 10142-1. It also requires that a registered person\, as defined (master installation electrician\, installation electrician or electrical tester for single phase)\, will issue a Certificate of Compliance for an electrical installation in line with the requirements set out in SANS 10142-1.\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:AWEaP Supporting Women Energy Entrepreneurs
DESCRIPTION:Participating in the energy and power sector as a start-up energy company requires that you gain knowledge into how the sector procures products\, services\, solutions and systems. African Women in Energy and Power invites you to explore the sector and identify business opportunities to pursue. \nJoin us on the 22 June at 12h00 for a conversation on the following topics: \nElectricity Utility opportunities and procurement: In this conversation we explore opportunities and how to follow procurement processes and policies to increase your success chances. \nPower and Energy: Original Equipment Manufacturers: In this conversation we explore how start up power and energy companies can work collaboratively with OEMs to capture emerging opportunities. \nDeveloping a renewable energy project: In this conversation we explore where you can access consulting support as you develop your energy project. \nAccess to finance: In this conversation we look at finance for energy projects. \nJoin us as we find answers to the most energy entrepreneur challenges.

SUMMARY:Lessons learned from mining mini grids to national grids
DESCRIPTION:Wind + solar with a slice of energy storage = reliable\, dispatchable power that up to now has always been the preserve of fossil fuel generation.  One site\, one interconnection\, many MW of clean\, grid-friendly energy. That is the promise of the hybrid RE system. The new frontier to decarbonisation of the global energy system. \nThe idea looks great on paper but in reality\, the hybrid grid is a mix of interconnected complexities relating to cost\, technology and market drivers. No two hybrid systems are alike. Market drivers – grid constraints\, grid stability or fast-response ancillary services – differ from country to country. \nThe experience of mines in Africa that are building hybrid minigrids for their own use though could point the way towards decarbonisation of energy systems. The need for reliable own generation has become the mother of invention when it comes to bringing renewable energy into a minigrid at a mine. \nWhat then are the lessons mines are learning about creating their own renewable energy system and how can these be scaled up by national grids? \nDiscussion points \n\nHave developers reached a tipping point where they have enough capacity and capability to work on multiple technologies inhouse?\nHave the complexities of interconnection technology and design reached a point where systems can be built on a large scale?\nWorking up a financial and technical model attractive to mine\, investor and developer that limits risk while sharing rewards and can thus be scaled up?\n\nRegister here \n
